Emerging drug-resistant bacteria are a significant problem in controlling pathogens. In 2008, a Klebsiella pneumoniae strain was isolated from a patient with a urinary tract infection. The microbe was found to be resistant to most known beta-lactam antibiotics, erythromycin, ciprofloxacin, rifampicin, and chloramphenicol. A 180 kb stretch of DNA was found to encode a series of genes responsible for the multidrug resistance. By 2009, this drug resistance profile had spread to Enterobacter sp., Escherichia coli, and Morganella morganii. Propose a mechanism that the microbe used to spread this DNA around. Propose an experiment to test your hypothesis.
