Question

A 13-year-old boy presents to your clinic with fever for 2 days. He does not know how high the fevers have been since he does not have a thermometer at home--he just knows that he has been hot. Five years ago, he was in an auto accident and had his spleen removed. He is on prophylactic daily antibiotics that he has the responsibility of taking on his own for 3 months now--since he turned 13 and his mother decided he was old enough to be responsible to take his own medication. Upon further inquiry, his mother reveals that she has found a few pink pills in his bed sheets recently but did not pursue this issue--figuring he would get the hang of taking his medicine soon enough. He has a cough, a stomachache and "feels really bad."
