A newly-discovered pathogenic bacterium that causes skin lesions has a prophage that encodes the exfoliating toxin (the major virulence factor). The prophage lysogenic cycle is controlled by the lambda phage regulatory network. A team of researchers has proposed that a cI-inhibitor will provide an effective treatment for the bacterial disease. Explain what impact the researchers hope the cI inhibitor would have on both the prophage and the pathogenic bacterium. Do you think the treatment will work? Why or why not?
