Question

Place the steps for examining the ear with an otoscope in order from beginning to end. Document exam findings. Gently insert the speculum into the ear canal directing it slightly down and forward. Visualize the inner ear canal, tympanic membrane, and ossicles. Brace the ulnar surface or the fingers of your hand against the patient's chest. Straighten the adult patient's ear canal by gently pulling the auricle of the ear up, back, and slightly away from the head OR pull the auricle down and back to straighten the ear canal in a pediatric patient. Hold the otoscope's base between your thumb and with your fingers upside down. Select a proper-sized speculum for the patient, choosing the largest size that fits most comfortably into the patient's ear and place it on the otoscope.
