(Assume that there is no change in volume when the pure compounds are mixed.) The density of ethanol is 0.789g/cm^3 and that of water is .998g/cm^3. Alcoholic beverages are rated in proof, which is a measure of the relative amount of ethanol in the beverage. Pure ethanol is exactly 200 proof.
