A hairdresser, Australian Hairlines, decides to run a promotion in order to get some new customers. Australian Hairlines places an advertisement in a newspaper which states that anyone who appears with the advert from the paper will receive a haircut for $1. The next morning, the hairdresser's is swamped with people demanding a haircut for $1. Australian Hairlines puts up a sign in its window stating that there will be no more haircuts for $1, the promotion has finished. A number of people are really annoyed that they cannot receive the 'offer'. Similarly, there are too many people in the hairdressing salon to actually be given a haircut; they are asked to leave and told that the offer is also not available to them. What are the rights of various customers who are either in the hairdressing salon and claiming the reduced-price haircut, or who are unable to get into the premises? What is the situation of the hairdresser and the customers in terms of contract law?
