Promoting Staff Enjoyment of Work Tasks

You have a client living in a residential facility that engages in fecal smearing. That is, the client takes his own fecal matter when using the bathroom and smears feces on the floor, walls, sinks, mirrors, shower, etc. Understandably, your staff do not enjoy the task of cleaning up after the client. Using the Task Enjoyment Motivation Protocol, discuss how you would proceed through the four steps of the protocol to address this matter.
Step 1: Meet with staff & solicit their opinions about the specific aspect of the job task that make it undesirable to perform.
Step 2: In conjunction with Step 1, solicit & discuss ideas about what can be reasonably changed to make the task more enjoyable to perform.
Step 3: Make as many of the changes identified in Step 2 as realistic, supplemented where possible with the supervisor's ideas for making the task more enjoyable.
Step 4: Meet again with staff to solicit their opinions about how well the changes are working, and obtain additional ideas if necessary about other changes that may be needed.
