Case: In the report of "Sri Lanka'sMinistry of Regional Development's Progress in 2016 & Development Programs for 2017" (page 14), the environmentally-friendly agriculture products that are produced in agricultural villages are purchased directly by the government authority, such as rural agricultural producing organizations. this approach would promote sustainable development? If yes, why? If not, why?
Interventions were made in selling agricultural products in the villages where the agricultural development is being done by the Authority. If such an intermediation is not there, it has become a challenge for farmers to obtain reasonable price for their agri-products. Accordingly, Hadabima Authority has commenced a sales promotion program for agricultural products as a remedy in 2000. The basic objectives are as such,
Obtain a fair price to rural agri products.
Provide agri products to the urban consumer at a reasonable price.
Promote the traditional food consuming habits.
Minimize the post-harvest damages.
Solve the unemployment problem in the rural sector
Accordingly, the agri products produced in the agricultural villages are purchased directly by the Authority by following those objectives and sell the products through their sales network. Rural agriculture producing organizations have established for this purpose. The Authority is in the position of supplying quality vegetable to the consumers in the respective areas under this project and this project helps to maintain a fixed price for the products without any price fluctuations in the market. At present 12,000 farming families in the provincial level are involved in the marketing network project and one of the targets of the project is to upgrade the economic and social standard of the farmers.
