Questions
1. Think of an example of when you witnessed gold plating on a job or project, and it was either not well received or it caused new problems. This could have been done by you or someone else, and it could have been on a project at work or school, with workers you hired, or on a personal project.
1. What was the gold plating, and what was it about the extra work that was negative or created new problems?
2. How could this have been avoided?
How can you apply this lesson to your projects
2. Projects by nature are implementing changes, or something new. Not everyone will be comfortable with the changes that your project will bring. This can lead to responses that range from a quiet lack of support to outwardly fighting the change and making it difficult to move forward on the project. Drawing on our class readings and guest speakers, how can you overcome resistance on your project?
Apply concepts from at least three different class or outside sources (readings, lecture, guest speakers, etc.), identifying them so I know when you are using a source and where it came from. Be specific and use examples.
3. Many of the projects that you will work on throughout your career will be planned initiatives that incorporate best practices like those we discussed this semester. Examples of these projects are updating a process or implementing a new product or service. Then there are the impromptu, unplanned projects that occur due to an outside circumstance, such as an accident, a disruptive action within your industry, pandemic closings / re-openings, or other.
Think of an example of an impromptu or unplanned project that occurred. This can be driven by a historical event, a news story, or a recent event. From a project management perspective, please answer the following questions about that project.
A. In 1-2 sentences, briefly describe the unplanned project. If helpful, provide a link to a site or a story about that event.
B. Evaluate the project management response to the event. From a project management perspective, what was managed effectively? What could have been managed better or done differently? Why?
I am grading this based on applying sound project management principles rather than the opinions presented. For example, I am not grading this based on a conclusion of whether a city, person, or organization did a good job or not, but rather based on your statements and supporting points regarding how they planned and managed the resulting project.
4. Conduct a Lessons Learned / Retrospective for the class this semester. Note: this is a review of the class, NOT your project. Include things that went well (things that you did right) and things that did not go well (things that could have gone better or that you would do differently next time). List at least 8 items in total, with at least two positives and at least two negatives. Clearly label items as positive or negative. Briefly explain each item.
