Women's Rights Movement
Project: Debating the Equal Rights Amendment
Purpose: After engaging in a debate, evaluate your participation as a listener and speaker through a written response.
Summary: In this assignment, debate whether an equal rights amendment to the Constitution is necessary to secure equal rights for women. You will choose roles, prepare for the debate, and conduct a debate.
Debate Resolution: An equal rights amendment is necessary because women are not specifically protected by the laws of the Constitution. In the debate, one side, the affirmative, will argue in favor of the resolution, and the other side, the negative, will argue against the resolution.
Determine who will be the moderator, who will be the affirmative, and who will be the negative. Keep in mind that debaters often argue for positions they do not personally support. Gather your own ideas about your topic. Conduct research to gather evidence that supports your ideas. Write to evaluate the debate. Use your notes from the debate to complete the debate evaluation. Be sure to write in complete sentences and use appropriate grammar.
Include in the debate evolution..
1. Describe a time in the debate when you drew on your preparation by referring to evidence gathered earlier.
2. Describe a time in the debate when you learned something new and integrated that new information into your own ideas or response.
3. Describe a time in the debate when someone challenged another speaker's reasoning, evidence, ideas, or conclusion. 4. Describe a time in the debate when you responded thoughtfully to a different viewpoint or perspective.
5. Describe a time in the debate when someone made a point and backed it up with strong reasons and evidence.
6. Describe a time in the debate when someone made a point and did not back it up with strong reasons and evidence.
