Please note that part of the challenge is selecting an appropriate topic; students will need to use critical thinking skills to anticipate the information that needs to be communicated in the memo (versus follow-up communication like updates, conversations, meetings, etc.).

Tips for Success

1. Organize your memo. It should have a clear structure.
2. If your memo is event-driven, pay careful attention to your dates. A writer will want to announce an event with advanced notice-how advanced depends on the event itself.
3. Make sure that all relevant audiences that need to know this information are included.
   • Ex: If there is a change in policy or something make that shifts the company/department/team's functions, some type of administrator should be CCd if it's not coming from them
4. The memo should be coming from the appropriate employee.
   • Ex: a team member should not be announcing a company-wide policy change to everyone.
   • Ex: a student should not be sending their instructor a memo.
