As much as organizations and employees try to operate in a productive and prosperous environment, some issues and disputes may arise due to misunderstandings and/or misinterpretations of the employment agreement. If this occurs, it opens the door for a union to enter the workforce to provide a protective shield for employees. If a certification process is approved by the Labour Relations Board, the collective bargaining process will commence in order to create a collective agreement that is a legally binding document outlining a mutually acceptable labour-management contract. Even when collective agreements are in place, though, which dictate the terms and conditions of employment, some misinterpretation may occur. Several mechanisms are available to deal with those issues, such as grievance, mediation, and arbitration. In non-unionized settings, misunderstandings and disputes are handled through disciplinary actions and the application of alternative dispute resolution.
