Surveying Assignment -
Introduction -
For this assignment, you are required to produce an electronic poster outlining information on surveying. Your team will produce the poster in the form of a group ePortfolio page.
In this assignment, you will examine the basics of surveying to recognize their practical applications and limitations particularly in relation to an appreciation of accuracy and precision and the relationship between engineering design and survey measurement.
You will also get the opportunity to work in a team environment to assemble and present information on surveying methodologies and their application within an engineering context.
Aim of the poster -
The poster is intended as a resource for a 'newbie' engineer, who has been assigned a surveying task, but has never studied surveying and has very little experience in this field.
Your poster has to outline the steps of surveying thoroughly, and encourage, enthuse and envelop the newbie into the noble profession of surveying - to the extent that the newbie would pursue being at the sharp end of the surveying process (i.e. the land surveyor in the video) rather than have the 'ignominy' of occupying one of the worst jobs in history (i.e. the pole man in the video) to the right ...
You can focus on either of the following processes: levelling survey OR planimetric survey.
Your poster should achieve two aims:
1. provide some basic instructions for the beginning surveyor
2. develop their enthusiasm and interest in this type of surveying as an engineering skill.
For the purposes of the assignment, target your information level for an audience of first year engineering students.
Ideally, the Poster should include the following sections (Introduction about 200 words, each other section about 300 words):
- Title (including names of group members)
- Introduction to the surveying process
- Examples and images of the surveying process
- An explanation of the inherent steps in the surveying process
- A description and images of any equipment that is needed
- A case study demonstrating engineering use of the surveying process
- An historical perspective on this surveying process
- Information on appropriate (and inappropriate!) engineering use of this surveying process
- Team Agreement and Communications record
Make your Poster as informative and interesting as possible. It must demonstrate research, and understanding of the topic. You should include a variety of media (see below), and information from various sources (including peer reviewed journal articles, etc).
The layout and structure of the Poster is up to your team, but you should aim to include a number of different types of media, such as:
- Text
- Documents
- Images and graphics (especially images and graphics that you have produced yourself)
- Video clip or links (especially video that you have produced yourself)
- Relevant hyperlinks
- even interactive activities
- You can also include news sources or RSS feeds, or any other types of input which the ePortfolio will accept.
Ideally, you should make an own video or produce a resource of some sort.
Also remember that images can be used just as effectively as video and create a smaller file.
Working as a team -
You will need to collaborate or communicate regularly with your team members. To help you do this, we have created a team agreement template (see Assessment downloads)
You will also need to maintain minutes from all your team communications, no matter what form they take. (see Assessment downloads)
You must include the completed Team Agreement and Communication Record/Action Plan as an upload in your Poster presentation. The easiest way is to upload them as files for download (under the 'Media' tab in the editing mode) to the bottom of the ePortfolio page. You can also upload them into a folder if you wish.
Your team will have a variety of online tools which you can use to communicate and collaborate to produce your assignment.
- Lync online meeting tool - you can meet as often as you like
- Team Forum (can be seen by your team and the teaching team only)
- Group ePortfolio, in which you will present your Surveying poster
You can see more information on working with your team on the Step 1 page of the 'Developing your Poster' resource.
Supporting resources - We recommend you take a 5 step approach to developing your poster
The five steps
Step 1: Select your team and start regular team meetings, preparing a team agreement and starting a Communication Record/Action Plan
Step 2: Set up your team's group ePortfolio
Step 3: Do the research and collect the media for the Poster
Step 4: Create and populate the Poster page
Step 5: Get feedback before submitting.
Note - You can use Mahara a portfolio. The assignment had got two questions you need select one question and levelling surveying question convinced.
