Studies by Landsteiner in the early 1900s led to the recognition that antibodies are highly specific in their intertaction with antigen. This is the attribute of "specificity". Another attribute/feature of the immune system became apparent from Landsteiner's work. This attribute/feature, called "X", led immunologists to realize that immune system must be able to produce an enormous number of different antibodies. What is the "attribute/feature X" and why does its existence mean the immune system must be able to produce "zillions" of antibodies?
