Earthworks assignment
Client's Brief
Two factories are to be developed on a rectangular block of land covering 33 hectares. The site is enclosed with the site boundaries described as (200N, 350E) to (800N, 350E) to (800N, 900E) to (200N, 900E) return to (200N, 350E). Access to the site is via a road presently terminating at the location (200N, 500E). Factory 1 will need a level rectangular area of 8 hectares and Factory 2 will be constructed on a level rectangular area of 6 hectares. The required distance between boundaries of the two factories is at least 50 metres. The level area within the boundary of each factory is to be formed using a minimum amount of earthmoving in a Balanced cut and fill operation. Earthmoving operations outside the confines on the site will not be permitted.
An access road with total width of 25 m (excluding batters) to the two factories will be paved. The maximum longitudinal gradient at any location along the access road is not to exceed 10%. The earthmoving operation for the access road is to be a Cut and Fill Balanced operation. All cut and fill batters for factory lots and access road are to have a maximum slope of 1 in 2 (1 vertical to 2 horizontal).
The client has commissioned your company as Consulting Engineer(s) to plan the earthmoving operations for the factory lots and access road.
This assignment only covers the basic earthmoving operations for the factory sites and access road. Surface drainage works are to be planned in a later brief and are NOT to be considered in this assignment.
Report Requirements
Present a report to include:
1. A contour plan drawing showing the entire existing site, showing the location of the two factories and the centreline of the access road.
2. Calculations for the volumes to produce a Cut and Fill Balance for each factory platform and access road earthworks. Specimen calculations are to be presented to show your method.
3. Detail contour plan drawing showing the final levels for the platforms and the access road including batter locations and a couple of cross sections through the access road.
4. Total volume of Cut and Fill for the whole works.
5. Calculations for the total minimum earthmoving machinery and equipments.
6. A time schedule for the various sections of the project.
7. All calculations using Microsoft Excel should be submitted as part of report.
