Review the formulas and processes for dosage calculations in Henke's Med Math or any dosage calculation textbook. Submit completed calculations and completed prescription forms for each of the problems as appropriate. Students are cautioned to not round up or down until the final calculation. Round the final answer to the nearest 0.5 unless reasoning tells you to do otherwise. Some considerations must be addressed when prescribing medication for the pediatric and complex elderly client, or there may be a sub-therapeutic to a toxic dose or blood level of the prescribed drug. You must do the research and cite resources to back up your rationale. These considerations include: Age-Related Changes - changes in metabolism, renal or live function, absorption, or body composition can affect the dose or response to the prescribed medication. Risk Factors - often changes in weight, hormone levels, and health behaviors can affect the desired response to the medication. Lack of awareness of the medication or side effects and polypharmacy are also risk factors. Functional Consequences - the "tolerance" of an older patient to a medication, the increased risk of potential side effects, medication-chemical (i.e. alcohol), and non-compliance result in poor therapeutic responses to the medications. Calculate the weight of pounds to kilograms first by calculating the fraction of the ounces to pounds. For example, a baby weighs 6 pounds 9 ounces. The 9 oz is divided by 16.
