John, a 41-year-old male who comes into the emergency room, is in extreme pain from a prolonged erection lasting 3 hours. He indicates that the erection came on suddenly and has not gone away. He denies the use of medications to treat erectile dysfunction but you are suspicious about his behavior and question him further. He eventually discloses that he does have a cocaine addiction. He is not taking any other medications. He does not have a history of other health problems. He is diagnosed with priapism, a condition of prolonged erection, caused by cocaine use.
