CPCCBC4018A Apply site surveys and set-out procedures to building and construction projects
Assessment Task - Demonstration / Observation
The task has assessment activities, designed to assess your skills, knowledge and performance, as required to show competency in this unit. You should complete these as stated below and as instructed by your trainer / assessor.
Part 1 - Site Levelling #1 - Shooting levels for excavation/footings
Your Assessor will provide you with a plan and specifications for a site. Complete the leveling and record all the data and processes in the Job Checklist below. Ensure that the leveling activity utilizes use of a spirit level and straight edge and automatic or laser levelling devices. To complete the activity, you may utilise the following equipment:
• automatic level and levelling staff
• bolt cutters
• chalk lines
• hammers
• laser levels
• laser targets
• marking equipment
• measuring tapes and rules
• plumb bobs
• saw stools
• saws
• signage for laser levelling
• spirit levels and straight edges
• string lines
• water levels
• wooden and steel pegs.
This task requires:
• Set up and test levelling equipment
• Transfer levels and record differences in height undertaking a closed traverse using both the rise and fall method and the height of instrument method on a minimum of three projects
• Confirm accuracy of the readings taken, including set up and movement of device in two locations
• Accurately record the results of each levelling procedure to organisational requirements
• Calculate distances using an optical levelling instrument and levelling staff
• Complete the Level Booking Form
Part 2 - Site Leveling #2 - Shooting levels on Sloping Block
Your Assessor will provide you with a plan and specifications for a site. Complete the leveling and record all the data and processes in the Job Checklist below. Ensure that the leveling activity utilizes use of a spirit level and straight edge and automatic or laser levelling devices. To complete the activity, you may utilise the following equipment:
• automatic level and levelling staff
• bolt cutters
• chalk lines
• hammers
• laser levels
• laser targets
• marking equipment
• measuring tapes and rules
• plumb bobs
• saw stools
• saws
• signage for laser levelling
• spirit levels and straight edges
• string lines
• water levels
• wooden and steel pegs.
This task requires:
• Set up and test levelling equipment
• Transfer levels and record differences in height undertaking a closed traverse using both the rise and fall method and the height of instrument method on a minimum of three projects
• Confirm accuracy of the readings taken, including set up and movement of device in two locations
• Accurately record the results of each levelling procedure to organisational requirements
• Calculate distances using an optical levelling instrument and levelling staff
• Complete the Level Booking Form
Part 3 - Set Out Project
The practical construction task for this assessment is to set out a full-size L shape building on a relatively level site to specifications.
To complete this task, you must:
Complete a two-peg test
Before you start any project work your first task will be to carry out a two peg test to ensure your level is properly calibrated. Record in your field notes the process and state whether the test results are within the calibration limits.
Collimation error occurs when the collimation axis is not truly horizontal when the instrument is level. The effect is illustrated in the sketch below:
1. Set out and mark on the ground (with wooden pegs driven into the earth, or roofing nails in tar) two point some 40 m apart. Set up the level exactly mid-way (within 0.5m) between them.
2. Take measurements of backsight and foresight for this first setup. The height difference DH will be free of the effects of collimation error.
3. Next, move the level to a position just beyond the fore staff position (about 5m).
The difference between the readings of the two level positions should be zero. If more than 5 mm the instrument need to be calibrated.
