Procedure: Mixing Two Medications in One Syringe-Needle Unit
Objective: Having been provided with a physician's order and the necessary equipment and supplies, you are to correctly mix two medications in one syringe-needle unit.
Directions: S stands for Satisfactory. U stands for Unsatisfactory. In the time allowed, complete the procedural steps listed below. You will need to obtain a satisfactory mark for this procedure in order to pass this class.
Procedural Steps:
1. Verified the physician's order.
2. Worked in a well-lighted, quiet, clean area.
3. Performed medical asepsis handwash. Put on gloves.
4. Compared the medication labels with the physician's order.
5. Prepared a syringe-needle unit for use.
6. Drew up an amount of air into the syringe that was equal to the amount of medication to be withdrawn.
7. Cleansed rubber-stoppered portion of the vial.
8. Placed the syringe-needle unit in dominant hand. Removed needle sheath.
9. Picked up vial in other hand. Inverted vial.
10. Inserted needle into the rubber-stoppered portion of the vial.
11. Injected equal amount of air into the vial.
12. Filled the barrel with ordered amount of medication.
13. Removed needle from vial.
14. Replaced sheath over needle.
15. Checked for air bubbles.
16. Placed syringe-needle unit on medicine tray or clean, dry surface.
17. Compared second medication label with physician's order.
18. Opened sterile needle package.
19. Removed needle from filled syringe.
20. Placed open needle onto filled syringe.
21. Cleansed rubber-stoppered portion of the second vial.
22. Placed syringe-needle unit in dominant hand. Removed needle sheath.
23. Picked up second vial. Inverted vial.
24. Inserted needle into rubber-stoppered portion of vial.
25. Did not inject air into second vial.
26. Filled barrel with ordered amount of medication.
27. Removed needle from vial.
28. Replaced sheath over needle.
29. Checked for air bubbles.
30. Checked to be sure of correct total doses as ordered.
31. Prepared to administer medication to the patient.
