Procedure: Handling a Sterile Syringe-Needle Unit - Disposable Peel-Back
Objective: Having been provided with a physician's order and the necessary equipment and supplies, you are to correctly handle a sterile syringe-needle unit-disposable peel-back method.
Directions: S stands for Satisfactory. U stands for Unsatisfactory. In the time allowed, complete the procedural steps listed below. You will need to obtain a satisfactory mark for this procedure in order to pass this class.
Procedural Steps:
1. Verified the physician's order.
2. Worked in a well-lighted, quiet, clean area.
3. Performed a medical asepsis handwash.
4. Put on gloves.
5. Obtained a sterile syringe-needle unit.
6. Checked the package label.
7. Opened the package correctly.
8. Correctly removed the unit from the package.
9. Held the outside of the barrel with the sheathed needle pointing upward.
10. Loosened the plunger and pushed it back into the barrel without touching the plunger's stem.
11. Assured oneself that the needle is attached to the tip of the syringe.
12. Loosened the sheath correctly.
13. Removed the sheath correctly.
14. Replaced the sheath without the needle touching the interior of the sheath.
15. Removed gloves.
16. Washed hands.
