Procedure: Eye Instillation
Objective: Having been provided with a physician's order, an eye medication, and the necessary equipment and supplies, you are to correctly administer an eye medication.
Directions: S stands for Satisfactory. U stands for Unsatisfactory. In the time allowed, complete the procedural steps listed below. You will need to obtain a satisfactory mark for this procedure in order to pass this class.
Procedural Steps:
1. Washed hands.
2. Assembled supplies.
3. Checked medication, including expiration date and read label three times.
4. Identified patient.
5. Explained procedure.
6. Correctly positioned patient.
7. Instructed the patient to stare at a fixed spot during instillation of the drops. Put on gloves.
8. Prepared eye drops or ointment for administration.
9. Had the patient look up to the ceiling and exposed the lower conjunctival sac of the affected eye.
10. Placed the number of drops ordered in the center lower conjunctival sac or a thin line of ointment in the lower surface of the eyelid. Replaced dropper in bottle.
11. Had the patient close the eye and roll the eyeball.
12. Blotted excess medication from eyelids.
13. Disposed of supplies.
14. Removed gloves.
15. Washed hands.
16. Documented procedure.
