Procedure: Ear Instillation
Objective: Having been provided with a physician's order, an ear medication, and the necessary equipment and supplies, you are to correctly administer an ear medication.
Directions: S stands for Satisfactory. U stands for Unsatisfactory. In the time allowed, complete the procedural steps listed below. You will need to obtain a satisfactory mark for this procedure in order to pass this class.
Procedural Steps:
1. Washed hands and assembled supplies.
2. Identified patient.
3. Explained procedure.
4. Correctly positioned patient.
5. Checked medication, including expiration date and read label three times.
6. Drew up the prescribed amount of medication. Put on gloves.
7. Gently pulled the top of the ear upward and back (adult) or downward and backward (child).
8. Instilled prescribed dose of medication into the affected ear.
9. Had the patient maintain the position for about 5 minutes.
10. If instructed by physician, inserted moistened cotton ball into external ear canal for 15 minutes.
11. Disposed of supplies.
12. Removed gloves.
13. Washed hands.
14. Documented procedure.
