Hispanics in California: Questions for Discussion

(Remember that I've told the class that there are no hard and fast answers to historical questions; a lot of it is your interpretation based on the facts. So there are no "Right" or "Wrong" answers.

Remember==these are not questions to be answered as on a quiz. They are only meant to 'kick start' your brain! Consider any thoughts or opinions you have on the general subject of this unit and don't forget that there is positive material as well!

  1. One of the characteristics of Hispanics in California has been their attachment to the land, as rancheros during the Californios period, to workers and laborers throughout the 19th and 20th century. How do they compare to other groups (Filipinos, Chinese, Japanese) as laborers on large farms in California? Similarities? Differences?
  2. Let's discuss the problems Hispanics have faced as migrant farm laborers. They are both encouraged to work as growers need labor and discouraged from remaining after the crop has been harvested. What are the problems with this system? How does it affect housing, education, and other social services for migrant workers?
  3. We discussed how California Indians began to get social awareness with the Alcatraz occupation, and then political clout with the money from casinos. How does this compare with Hispanics? Do they have political clout? How/Why? Do they have anything comparable to the money California Indians have with Casino earnings? How do Hispanics have some political clout in the last two decades?
  4. Consider why Hispanics have become so much more visible than Filipinos In the history of the farm labor movement and ongoing issues today.
