1. An air compressor operates at steady state with air pressure of 50 bar. Kinetic and potential energy effects are negligible. Determine the pump work input, in kJ per kg of water flowing, using (a) Eq. 6.51c, (b) an energy balance. Obtain data from Table A-3 and A-5, as appropriate. Compare the results of parts (a) and (b), and comment.

2. Compare the work required at steady state to compress water vapor isentropically to 3 MPa from the saturated vapor state at 0.1 MPa to the work required to pump liquid water isentropically to 3 MPa from the saturated liquid state at 0.1 MPa, each in kJ per kg of water flowing through the device. Kinetic and potential energy effects can be ignored.
