Based on the chapter "The Mysterious Power of Money", in Jackson Lears' Rebirth of a Nation. The Making of Modern America, 1877-1920 (2009). Based on what you interpreted from the Lears chapter, desglose what life was like for those at the very top of this society, in the middle, and at the bottom. Those at the bottom made up the vast majority of the population. What were the possibilities and concerns of people differently positioned in the United States at this time? Pay particular attention to how those at the very top of the economic structure acquired their wealth and the methods used to make sure people would continue to work hard for the wealthy at wages that kept them in poverty. How did some of the super wealthy, including a few who came to be celebrated for giving their wealth away after their death, treat the people who produced that wealth - their employees? How were people treated when they rebelled and demanded decent working conditions and pay? Whose side did the government take in these disputes?
