Think of the last time you felt some psychological distress (ex. sadness, stress, anxiety, etc.). How did you handle it? Did you think about anything, or say something to yourself? Did you share your experience with another person/other people? Why or why not? Do you think it's better to share these thoughts/feelings, or is it better to keep them private? Based on the different perspectives of psychology discussed in Chapter 1, which one/s would you say best explain/s your experience?
I think everyone in this world goes through psychological distress. It's just that some people are able to keep themselves in control. As a behavioral health associate in a psychiatric emergency room I have developed a tough skin and ways on how to cope with my psychological distress.
On a regular day basis I encounter patients with mental health disorders nine times out of ten they either get or come in aggressive. As per my job I'm there for patients that are having a crisis so at times I do have to endure verbal abuse as well as getting physical with patients in order to put them in restraints. After a rough week I usually vent to my wife about what I go through and take a couple of shots of tequila just to relax my nerves. As per my experience expressing my feelings/thoughts to someone actually helps me.
