Arguments and disputes are the most prevalent circumstances under which homicides take place (56%), and a sizable minority (31%) of killings occur in the course of the commission of another felony offense (especially robberies).

A firearm was the most common lethal weapon used in homicide incidents; 67% of homicides in the SHR data involved the use of a firearm, whereas approximately 13% involved knives or other cutting instruments.
