Medicine and Clinical Studies A patient's blood cholesterol level is often checked during a routine physical examination. A blood sample is taken (from the finger or arm) and tested for total cholesterol and HDL (high-density lipoprotein, the "good cholesterol") cholesterol levels in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). If total cholesterol is less than 200 mg/ dL, then no action is taken. If a patient's total cholesterol is approximately 300 mg/dL, a new drug together with a strict diet is prescribed to reduce this number to a safe level. The amount of time (in days) it takes to reduce total cholesterol to a safe level has an exponential distribution with λ = 1/15. A patient with total cholesterol of 300 mg/dL is randomly selected and placed on this drug-and-diet regimen.
a. Find the mean number of days until the total cholesterol level is safe (less than 200 mg/dL).
b. Find the probability that the total cholesterol level will be safe in a number of days within two standard deviations of the mean.
c. Find a value d such that 75% of all such patients have a safe cholesterol level with d days.
d. Suppose two patients are selected at random. Find the probability that this drug-and-diet regimen works for at least one of the patients within 10 days.
Find the sample size n, and hence the sample mean ¯X . Use this information to calculate a 95% confidence interval for the average number of credit cards carried by students.

Write the least squares prediction equation for y.- Give the null hypothesis for testing overall model adequacy.- Conduct the test, part b, at α = .01 and give the appropriate conclusion.
Plot 4-Day (y) versus 2-Day (x). Describe the direction and strength of the relationship, and comment on whether there are any outliers.
The variable X has a normal distribution with mean µ = 75 and standard deviation s = 6. The variable Y has a normal distribution with mean µ = 70.
The grade point average of the students at UTC is 2.80 with a standard deviation of 0.84. The grade point average of students at UTK is 2.4 with a standard deviation of 0.84. Which university shows a more dispersed grade distribution?

An experiment was conducted to compare the reaction times of a group of 10 volunteers (from a psychology class) to a bright light versus the sound of a loud air horn. Find a 95% confidence interval for µD = µX - µY .
Weights of newborn babies in the United States are normally distributed with a mean of 3425 grams and a standard deviation of 495 grams. A newborn weighing less than 2200 grams is considered to be at risk. What fraction of newborn babies are in th..
