Sports and Leisure A large sporting goods company has just received a shipment of 100,000 table tennis balls. USA Table Tennis tournament regulations specify that the diameter of the ball must be 40 millimeters (mm). Suppose the distribution of the diameter is normal with standard deviation 0.4 mm. Twenty-five table tennis balls will be selected at random, and the diameter of each will be carefully measured. If the mean diameter is within 0.2 mm of 40 mm, then the shipment will be accepted. Otherwise the entire shipment will be returned to the manufacturer.
a. Suppose the true mean diameter of the table tennis balls is 40 mm. What is the probability that the entire shipment will be sent back to the manufacturer?
b. Suppose the true mean diameter of the table tennis balls is 40.4 mm. What is the probability that the shipment will be accepted by the sporting goods store?
c. Suppose the true mean diameter of the table tennis balls is 39.4 mm. What is the probability that the shipment will be accepted by the sporting goods store?
