Greenleaf's principles of servant leadership encompass multiculturalism within key characteristics. In listening to Slover (2019) I had never considered the idea of listening as being culturally inclusive and diverse. Slover suggests that as servant leaders the information we collect can create a culture of inclusivity just by simply allowing people to feel heard (Slover, 2019). The art of listening is a skill and it takes mindful leaders to create and sustain environments that support inclusive conversations. At the basis of servant leadership is the voice of others as a primary source of engagement. Within the last year, I learned a valuable lesson about active listening.

It was after an adverse event that I realized I missed what was being communicated to me and made assumptions instead of resolutions. The end result of this situation caused months of heartache and broken rapport. Active-empathetic listening does not adversely impact work or engagement (Jonsdottir & Kristinsson, 20202). Like Slover, Jonsdottir & Kristinsson (2020) identified that supportive leadership, using conscious and active listening centered communication is highly significant for employees' work engagement.
