Assignment:

Is the 'principle of procreative beneficence' an ethical principle that should govern procreation? If you reject the principle of procreative beneficence, explain the ethical guidelines that you believe do apply in the context of procreation (e.g., Are prospective parents permitted to select for/against any characteristic they prefer? Are there some genetic characteristics that prospective parents ought to select against/for?). Defend your position through a discussion of Savulescu and either (a) the discriminatory critique of selection (you may refer to the PowerPoint slides for this discussion) or (b) Sandel. In the course of your analysis, address at least 2 of the following issues:

1. Is there an ethical distinction between selection against sex and selection against disability?

2. Is 'enhancement' more problematic than selection against disability? Explain why each one might be considered more problematic than the other.
