ME5548 Analyses of carotid atherosclerotic lesions by image processing

Objective 1: To understand the principles of medical image processing and segmentation
Objective 2: To quantify the percentages of atherosclerotic lesion on the lumen area blockage

Brief Description: A research article (journal paper) is provided to the student which described a study in MRI imaging on atherosclerotic lesions in carotid arteries. The images were acquired with different MR image sequences to demonstrate the different components in the lesions.

In this assignment, figures 3 and 4 in the paper were used as the sample images.

The aim of the image processing is to produce the luminal contour of the artery, the contour of out wall, and calculate the degree of stenosis of the plaque demonstrated in figures 3 and 4.

Pre-processing
• At least two pre-processing methods should be tried at this stage and analysis the outputs.

Regarding the segmentation,
• Using the image segmentation methods which you think are suitable to segment
a) luminal region and produce a luminal contour;
b) arterial outer wall;
c) lesion region;
• Calculate the degree of blockage of the lesion (the area ratio between the luminal region and the total area of the artery inside the outer wall).
• Comment on the factors which may influence the accuracy of your segmentation result.
• Comment on the advantages of using multicontrast MRI technique on measuring atherosclerotic lesions.
