Principles of HVAC System Design and Installation.
Learning Outcome 1: Which you will be expected to present a design proposal for a heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system for a non-domestic building type.
Assignment Scenario:
Your client is an up-and-coining e-commerce company,: ezenExportmet, wishing to build a prestigious company' eadu uarteis complex to accommodate their expanding organisation. In consultation with their architect, an out of town browntield site has been selected, Drawings have been prepared and submitted for inniine planning with the LPA. The proposed new development will involve several buildings: A new 24m high office block, arranged. ver 6 floors (5 floors of office accommodation above ground and a! asernent level gym.} You arc currently employed by a Building. crvices Consultancy to carry out the air conditioning system design. tau have been provided with the general arrangement drawings and upporting information for the new office block- You have bccn sked to provide discussion, information and relevant design alculations for a suitable air conditioning system heating system, tic hiding any possible sustainable options. Your work should refer to nilastry standard guides and legislation,
The new building designed by the architects, has a southern aspect facing exactly I8' from the south. The glazing has been arranged to incorporate structural shading on the southern aspect, providing a sunlit glass area, on the design day condition, of 80% of the glazed area.
The fabric elements of the building envelope comply with the limiting values of Part L of the building regulations.
Glazing: 50% of the wall area.

Use CIBSF. Guide A and J tables for Saktir temperature, mean Sol-air temperature and external air temperature.
Your assignment must present all calculations, measurcinents, data, clearly using comet units and make reference to industry standard guides and legislation throughout.
Assessment Task
You have been hired by a local Air-Conditioning Services firm, as an assistant to the building services engineer. The firm has been appointed to manage the design and installation of a new heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system for a non-domestic building type. Your employer has tasked you with identifying and preparing an initial report on the pre-design information needed and cooling loads required for the building.
Your report should include:
an overview of the design process for an HVAC system
a review of the design data for an HVAC installation for the given building.
the HVAC system installation has to meet stringent requirements therefore you must include a health and sathty risk assessment.
demonstrate how you performed the necessary calculation to establish the u-values needed for heat loss, and total heating/cooling loads to support the design of the HVAC system in your proposal.
explain what effect the changes to the materials used will have en the calculation of U values for the given building. consider alternative HVAC strategics for the given building.
Include your information with evidence to present your design proposal for the non-domestic HVAC installation.
produce your detailed calculations for the pipe sizing and duct sizing for the non-domestic HVAC installation.
Referring to your proposal discuss how the HVAC system components meet the NEW standards and requirements for the given building.
Identify the factors that relate to human comfort that support your proposal for the HVAC system installation for a non-domestic building type.
Assess the implications for the use of minimum u values in domestic and non-domestic building types.
Analyse the characteristics and performance of selected components of the FIVAC installation.
Discuss how the different components of the I-1VAC plant have a direct influence on their selection for the given installation.
Using your own judgement on the importance to health and safety and environmental legislation relating to the design and operation of a non-domestic EIVAC installation.
Evaluate a range of options that apply qualitative and quantitative methods to improve sustainability in a given project.
