A gardener wants to see how the amount of sunlight and water affect the growth of her vegetables. She takes 40 squash plants and she randomly assigns half them to be placed in direct sunlight (they receive 8 hours of direct sunlight per day), and the other half she puts in shade (they do not receive any direct sunlight). She gives 10 of the plants 1.5 gallons of additional water per day, 10 of the plants 1 gallon of additional water per day, 10 of the plants 0.5 gallon of additional water per day, and 10 of the plants no additional water per day. Each of the plants is randomly assigned the amount of water they received. Identify the experimental units, the explanatory and response variables, and list all the treatments.
