The following is just a guideline - it is not intended to be an exhaustive list of what you need to know. It is up to you to know and be able to apply the concepts we have been discussing in class and you have been reading about. It is assumed you have been in class regarding in-class concepts (publisher slides are posted on Canvas; Instructor slides not posted on Canvas).
• Principles of emotional communication - see Text & publisher & Rod's slides; be able to explain & provide examples
- You will need to know all areas within the Principles of emotional communication
• Benefits of expressing emotion constructively;
o emotional intelligence (significant in-class discussion); consequences of emotions; display rules
• I -statements/messages - what they are, why utilized and how to construct them (know how to construct effective I-statements)? I-messages discussed extensively in class.
• Principles of Conversation (know each and what is involved in each - e.g. development process of, dialogic, turn taking process; politeness & how to be polite, etc. & how each can be increased/improved).
• Everyday conversations - know each of the types & be able to apply them (e.g. giving advice, small talk, etc.).
• All areas of the Text and class discussions are open to assessment.
• Advantages & disadvantages of interpersonal relationships
• Influences of technology on interpersonal relationships (advantages/disadvantages) - generally
• Jealousy, bullying & how to deal with them
• POSITIVE approach to improving relationship communication - know and be able to apply each of these principles completely
• What is interpersonal conflict & what gives rise to conflicts?
• Myths about conflict (think about advantages/disadvantages)
• Characteristics of conflict - know each of these & how they apply (see also * below)
o * Content vs. relationship - examples of each & be able to identify
o * Conflict styles - know the styles and be able to apply them.
• Ways to manage conflict - look at the factors that influence how we deal with conflict
• Approaches to resolving conflicts - understanding of each
• Culture - role, achievement, power, people (understanding of)
o professions, personalities, gender, diversity in ability - understanding of & learning to adapt your style
• Workplace communication - understanding of the various components/factors (e.g. what is important to consider in telephone communication, computer-mediated communication, etc. - be able to explain)
• Mentoring, networking & teams - what they are; how to develop; stages of team development,
• Power & principles of power:
o sources of power (in-class discussion - sources & how to use them effectively);
o principles of how to increase your power; how to avoid powerless speech
• Intrapersonal - ways of increasing self-esteem without being arrogant
• Interpersonal power assertiveness power - know the "pattern" for communicating assertively & be able to apply the pattern; know how to communicate politely
You should be able to explain concepts, apply them to scenarios and be able to use examples. Remember it is your job to demonstrate your knowledge and ability to apply your knowledge on the test.
