Principles of Accounting I - Ethics Case CASE INFORMATION

Dr. Kevin James, Dean of the College of Business and Economics at North Carolina A&T State University, would like to invite Jordan Belfort to speak to business students. Belfort's engagement speaking fees normally range between $30,000 - $75,000. However, Belfort is willing to speak at NC A&T for $5,000 as part of his mission to give back to the community. During his speaking engagements, Belfort discusses the importance of business ethics and his crimes in connection with stock market manipulation. In addition to speaking engagements, Belfort has also published two books related to his crimes. This often draws criticism as Belfort is seen as profiting from his crimes and never fully making restitution to his victims. Belfort is willing to provide all COBE students a copy of his first book free of charge. Students may purchase the second book at a discount if they desire. Before deciding if Belfort should speak to COBE students, Dean James reaches out to students for their feedback.  

1. Assess alternative actions - Identify all possible courses of action that Dean James could take. 
2. Review ethical issues - Identify all sources of ethical conflict. Identify ethical theories that apply to the situation.
