Aim of assessment:

The aims of the assessment are for students to: - Discuss the principles and processes of evidence based practice;

- Critically discuss the importance of individual patient preferences when making clinical judgements about the implementation of research findings

- Critically discuss barriers and facilitators to implementing evidence based practice in the clinical area;

- Conduct a comprehensive literature search on a clinical question.

The purpose of this two part assessment is to enable postgraduate students to utilise their clinical experience within their learning and skill development associated with critically reviewing the literature as part of evidence based practice.

Details :

PART A: Essay 1,800 words (40%)

Part A is to identify barriers and challenges for implementing Evidenced Based Practice in a chosen clinical setting and strategies for addressing them. e..g if you work in ED, so what are the barriers and challenges for implementing EBP in ED and what strategies can be used to tackle the barriers.

With reference to your own clinical practice in no more than 1800 words identify the challenges and describe strategies for implementing an evidence-based approach to clinical practice. Incorporate literature into your discussion.

Note: you can briefly describe principles of EBP as background information , the key focus will be the barriers and challenges of implementing EBP in a chosen clinical setting and strategies for addressing them.

Marking Criteria:

A well developed and well informed discussion describes the challenges of implementing an evidence-based approach to clinical practice in the nominated clinical area (can be specific eg a neurosurgical ward or more general eg mental health). Discussion is informed by relevant literature. A well developed discussion that makes relevant and insightful links to the clinical area. Discussion addresses in detail the relevant and significant challenges and identifies strategies to implementing evidence-based approach in health care. An extensive range of authoritative and relevant literature have been synthesised and used to support all areas of the discussion Includes mainly primary source

Discussion is logical, clearly articulated and reflects a high scholarly standard. Evidence of breadth of reading (includes a minimum of 6 references). Referencing is accurate and conforms to APA style (in-text and reference list). The discussion follows a logical sequence and coherent flow. The discussion has a clearly identifiable introduction, body and conclusion. The writing style demonstrates use of sophisticated vocabulary and accurate grammar and the spelling is accurate. Adheres to word limit.

Reference list has 15 or more references that are relevant to the topic. All of the references have been identified from the students' own database searching. Referencing in-text (the body of the essay) and the reference list is consistently accurate and follows the APA Style.
