Please help with my case study........
Case Study:
The Earth Bible Team (EBT), an organization of biblical and religious scholars based in Adelaide, Australia, takes a very different approach to Scripture than the one we took in this lesson. Rather than interpret the Bible on its own terms, the EBT uses a series of "ecojustice principles" to guide its interpretation. These include:
- The principle of intrinsic worth: The universe, Earth, and all its components have intrinsic worth/value.
- The principle of interconnectedness: Earth is a community of inter-connected living things that are mutually dependent on each other for life and survival.
- The principle of voice: Earth is a living entity capable of raising its voice in celebration and against injustice.
- The principle of purpose: The universe, Earth, and all its components are a part of a dynamic cosmic design within which each piece has a place in the overall of that design.
- The principle of mutual custodianship: Earth is a balanced and diverse domain where responsible custodians can function as partners with, rather than rulers over, Earth to sustain its balance and a diverse Earth community.
- The principle of resistance: Earth and its components not only suffer from human injustices but actively resist them in the struggle for justice.
As you might already sense from a brief reading, these principles intentionally avoid biblical language so as to facilitate discussion with scientists and other religious traditions. They were also developed in dialogue with ecologists.
Not surprisingly, rather than finding a largely positive view of the earth in the Bible, the EBT finds a largely negative view-a view that should be exposed and resisted, so they say. For example, the general editor of the EBT, Norman C. Habel, rejects any attempt to "soften" the meaning of Genesis 1:26-28. Instead, he argues that this "dominion text" is properly interpreted as empowering humans to dominate and exploit the earth in a harsh and selfish way. Accordingly, it should be resisted and rejected.
