MP3672 Engineering Simulation - University of Central Lancashire

Introduction
Many computer-aided engineering packages use finite element techniques in order to simulate engineering problems. Particularly common are stress analysis, thermal analysis and Computational Fluid Dynamics solvers. This assignment requires an investigation to be carried out into the method using common Finite Element Analysis software. You will be given a template to simulate the experience of submitting a piece of work to a journal or conference.

Task
1. Describe, in detail, the basic principle of finite element analysis

2. Describe how FEA software might be used in industry. Include some of the issues regarding the use of FEA, in particular consider the issue of appropriate modelling and analysis solver ‘run time'.

3. Use ANSYS Workbench or COMSOL to analyse a problem.

Model a component of your choice - The component must be something that exists, if you are not confident with your mod- elling skills you can download the model as this assignment is not based on your CAD skills however, you must confirm the models proportion is realistic. As an example, the component could be a car suspension member, a bicycle handlebar stem or a lifting hook. Make the initial component simple (remove any fillet radii, lightening pockets etc.).

Determine realistic loading's and constraints for the component and use FEA to analyse the performance of the component.
• Use verification methods to show your confidence in your results
• Show mesh considerations

Use FEA to establish operational boundaries of the component. Make professional recommendations about your component ex- ample: consider points for improvement of the design.
All results should be displayed using graphical and numerical evidence produced with the post-processor, these should be clear to read also displaying legend (this should not be cut from any images or this will simply be colourful picture).

4. Critically appraise Ansys/Comsol as a piece of FEA software. Identify strengths and weaknesses of the software. Describe your experiences with the software.
