The New York Central and Penn Central Railroads went bankrupt in the mid-20th century. They were the primary players in the transportation of both materials and people. Along came aircraft, trucks, and interstate highways, and the trains were cooked. The railroads never reinvented themselves to look at transportation in different ways.
