1. A) What is EDLP? B) What conditions allow a retailer to follow an EDLP strategy as opposed to a high-low pricing strategy? C) What about EDLP at the business-to-business level? D) What problems may arise from trade level promotions? E) Given your response, what strategy should Barilla follow? F) What about IKEA? G) What about Swatch? Be specific in your responses.
2. Discuss consumer promotions and how their use may be valuable or detrimental. Pay specific attention to the Culinarian case. Also discuss execution issues and how difficulties here affect organizational understanding of trade promotion value.
3. How does the IKEA model violate the standard view on how companies should compete in relation to vertical and horizontal differentiation? Discuss product augmentation as part of your response. Select one other case of your choice and discuss similar issues.
4. What is positioning? Discuss positioning in relation to the “segment, target, and position” model. How did Burberry change its position relative to it industry? Provide an additional example of how a firm changed its position relative to an industry not discussed in one of the cases or in class.
5. Discuss distribution intensity and the three broad levels. Select any three cases discussed in class and identify the distribution intensity associated with the product. For each case, can you identify any inconsistency between the distribution intensity and other elements of the marketing mix?
6. Discuss the product life cycle (PLC). For each of the six cases discussed in class, identify the stage of the PLC for the firm’s principle product. Which of these products are either already in the decline phase or most likely to enter the decline phase over the moderate future (say, 10 years). What marketing advice would give to these firms?
7. One element of marketing strategy selection and design is that strategy must account for environmental change. Of the six cases discussed in class, which firm faced the highest level of environmental uncertainty; which faced the lowest level of environmental uncertainty? Compare and contrast these two environments and discuss (in general) the strategic options available to the firms from a marketing perspective.
8. What are the primary distinctions between push versus pull marketing? Discuss the push versus pull concept in relation to the Barilla and Cullinarian cases.
