54-year-old man comes to the primary care office reporting a scratchy raw sore throat, dysphagia (painful swallowing), mild productive cough, and rhinorrhea for the past 2 days. He states that his "ears feel clogged" and feels like he is getting acky. He tell the nurse practitioner that he has been taking lozenges which helps his sore throat. He denies nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, chest pain or headache. He does not take any medications and has no known drug allergies. He is a non-smoker and does not drink alcohol. He works as a school teacher for the local high school and many students have been ill with colds.
