1.) The prokaryotic bacterium Epulopiscium fishelsoni is one of the largest known bacteria, with cells ranging in size up to 600 micrometers (μm)! We don't really know how the bacterium can survive being that large, but which of the following might contribute? Put an "X" next to your answer and provide a rationale below your choice:

a. it has a larger number of organelles compared to other bacteria that can shuttle nutrients
b. it has digestive tissues that make better use of nutrients
c. it has access to a larger pool of nutrients than other bacteria
d. it has a larger genome than other bacteria

Please explain your answer:

2.) The antibiotic penicillin works by preventing the cross-linking of peptidoglycan (PGN) in cell walls. This makes cells walls weak, but does not necessarily kill the cells.

You conduct an experiment with the Gram positive bacterium Bacillus subtilis where you treat some cells (group A) with penicillin in a pure water solution. You treat another group of B. subtilis (group B) with penicillin in a solution that is isotonic with the bacterial cell contents. You find that the cells in group A die, but the cells in group B survive. Cells that are not treated with penicillin survive in both solutions.

2A.) Why does the penicillin kill the cells in group A but not group B.

2B.) Do you think penicillin would be effective against Archaeal cells? Why or why not?
