Question: Hypertension and obesity have been seen to affect more individuals with developmental disabilities than the general population. Hypertension and obesity can be linked to one another in some circumstances as elevated blood pressure can be a result of being overweight and not taking care of yourself. Other factors can also play a role in these two medical concerns.

In patients with cerebral palsy it remains unknown why they have an increased prevalence of hypertension and it is important to recognize that there may be some inaccuracies when measuring because of spasticity (Prasher & Janicki, 2019).

Obesity for children with CP has proven to be a risk as it can be hard to remain active when there is a disability that can make things very challenging. Children are put in school systems that may not be equipped for children with disabilities which can prevent children with CP from getting the proper exercise during their physical education classes.

Providing the proper inclusive tools needed to keep all children even with disabilities active is important as well as educating everyone about how important it is to stay active and take care of yourself no matter the age or situation.

Physical activity can look different for everyone, but it is important to find something that works for you to continue to take care of yourself and prevent hypertension and obesity.
