A lactating patient presents with a unilateral breast tenderness and fatigue. Vital signs are within normal limits except for a temperature of 100.9F. Physical exam shows an erythematous swollen unilateral left breast. The NP suspects mastitis. The patient states, "My sister told me to stop nursing because the baby could get sick from this infection." The NP advises: This is good advice and the patient will need antibiotics. The patient should continue to nurse on the affected breast as tolerated. The baby is at risk for a group A strep infection. The woman should pump and dump until the infection is resolved.
