Stephanie is a 26-year-old female who presents with symptoms of depression. She attributes her depressive symptoms to the recent ending of her relationship with her boyfriend. Stephanie says she has not slept in 4days because she is devastated by the break-up. She also reports feeling frustrated, because this is her fifth boyfriend this year, and they have all ended the relationship with her "for no reason." Stephanie really wants the relationship to work. However, her boyfriend is not interested in reconciliation. Stephanie's boyfriend suggested that she seek counseling after she wrote a letter to him stating that she was contemplating suicide. In the letter, she told her boyfriend that she would not commit suicide if he agreed to reconcile. She also told him that if he "really loved her," he would attend counseling with her. When he refused to come with her, Stephanie became so angry that she smashed the windshield of his car with a crow bar. Stephanie has a history of self-injury during adolescence. She denies current episodes of self-injury, although she appears to have several superficial cuts on her arms. Stephanie reports having "mood swings" throughout her life. She says that she does not have many friends, because people describe her as being "moody."
