English Question - Description - The profile essay presents a person or a place in a positive perspective. It demonstrates the significance of the person or location and maybe even showing the reader a different way of seeing the subject. This sort of essay is not as strict in style, so writers are welcome to take different approaches to make their subjects stand out. Feel free to use vivid descriptions. Be sure to have details and sources pertaining to background information and/or the subject you are profiling.
You will be writing about a person, place, or event significant to El Paso or the surrounding area. You must have a minimum of TWO sources for this paper and an interview.
This person, place, or event must have made some sort of impact in El Paso. If you are profiling a person, tell us how they are a success story created here in El Paso and they have now taken off elsewhere to spread the good word about the Sun City. People profiled must be an inspiration to the people of El Paso. They may have had a difficult upbringing or struggled in school, or even college, but it is not necessary. Try to avoid using your immediate family (mom, dad, brother, sister, etc) unless they have an extraordinary story. Instead, go with community members that may be inspirational to you.
If you are choosing an event or location, aim for a positive outlook on the city. If it is negative, explain how it is important to maintain this event or location as a historic part of El Paso.
Suggestions -
1. Interview the person you are profiling for better results (if possible). You may consider interviewing those who know him/her.
2. Interview owners and people who have been to locations or events.
3. Consider different styles of writing to convey the importance of the person you are profiling.
4. Highlight 2 or 3 reasons why the person, place, or event is notable.
Remember your essay structure: Purpose, Audience, and Stance will play a role in this essay. Tone and diction are VERY important in this essay.
Your Presentation - You will be creating a presentation 3-5 minutes long about the person, place, or event that you are profiling. Be creative! You want to highlight this person you spent countless hours researching. You can use PowerPoint, Prezi, iMovie (or equivalent), a posterboard. You must have a one-visual minimum. Please be sure you prepare for your presentation in advance.
Consider the following:
1. Who/What they are.
2. What they do.
3. How did they get to where they are? (Person)
4. How did the concept first begin? (Place/Event)
5. How did they surpass any struggles?
6. Are they successful now?
7. Anything else you want us to know.
8. A picture of the person, place, or event.
Please keep your presentations to 3-5 minutes (preferably three).
