Unit 4 Managing a Professional Engineering Project - Pearson Higher Nationals in Engineering
Assignment - Managing an engineering project focusing on Professional Engineer's Role in safety in building products/ systems
Learning Outcome 1: Formulate and plan a project that will provide a solution to an identified engineering problem.
Learning Outcome 2: Conduct planned project activities to generate outcomes which provide a solution to the identified engineering problem
Learning Outcome 3: Produce a project report analysing the outcomes of each of the project processes and stages
Learning Outcome 4: Present the project report drawing conclusions on the outcomes of the project
Assignment Brief: Scenario:
You are recently recruited in a leading company as a professional engineer to create and manage an engineering project designed to identify a solution to an engineering need.
As a professional Engineer you will able to examine the broad ranging aspects of safety in the context of the project(s) that you undertake in Engineering / Aeronautical Engineering / Nuclear Engineering / Rail Engineering / Manufacturing. For example, (a) designing out risk in a product/ machine/ system and (b) carry out Hazard and Risk Assessments (HARA) to ensure safety in design and safe ways of working. You will be able to analyse engineering functions and their impact on the health, wellbeing, and environment. As professional engineers you will have a broader understanding of how to combine the approach of ‘design for safety' with the conduct / duties placed upon them. The assignment should show how safety can be improved in the design and implementation process. Based on your selected project, you are required to carry the tasks shown below. You also need to show and the results and write a professional report about all these tasks. You report must be clear and the presentation must show professional standard.

Task 1 Select an appropriate engineering based project, giving reasons for the selection.
Task 2 Create a project plan for the engineering project
Task 3 Undertake a feasibility study to justify project selection.
Task 4 Illustrate the effect of legislation and ethics on the decision making process in developing the project plan.
Task 5 Conduct project activities, recording progress against original project plan.
Task 6 Explore alternative methods to monitor and meet project milestones, justify selection of chosen method(s).
Task 7 Critically evaluate the success of the project plan making recommendations for improvements
Task 8 Produce a project report covering each stage of the project and analysing project outcomes
Task 9 Use appropriate critical analysis and evaluation techniques to analyse project findings.
Task 10 Present the project report using appropriate media to an audience
Task 11 Analyse own behaviours and performance during the project and suggest areas for improvement
Task 12 Critically analyse the project outcomes making recommendations for further development
