In class, one thing that we discussed briefly was the following: in order to be able to hold people responsible for actions that they have performed in the past (like making a promise, giving to charity, running a red light, or robbing a bank) it is essential to have a concept of personal identity over time. Using a specific example that you come up with, explain why it is essential to have this notion of personal identity over time if we are going to hold people in the present responsible for the actions that they did in the past.
