An Argumentative Thesis Statement:
An argumentative paper makes a claim about a topic and justifies this claim with specific evidence. The claim could be an opinion, a policy proposal, an evaluation, a cause-and-effect statement, or an interpretation. The goal of the argumeMative paper is to convince the audience that the claim is true based on the evidence provided. Your choice of topic must be connected to mass media.
1. Your thesis statement should be specific-it should cover only what you will discuss in your paper and should be supported with specific evidence.
2. The thesis statement usually appears at the end of the first paragraph of a paper.
3. Your topic may change as you write, so you may need to revise your thesis statement to reflect exactly what you have discussed in the paper.
Example of an Argumentative Thesis Statement:
1. Children who watch television before the age of three are more violent than their peers who are not allowed to watch television.
Example of an Argumentative Thesis Statement for Mass Media:
2. Mass media claims to provide a diversity of different thoughts including political, religious, economic and others thrusting the opinion of the audience, but currently Mass Media is promoting a liberal basis.
The paper that follows should:
3. Present an argument and give evidence to support the claim
(Example) I. Children who watch television before the age of three are more violent than their peers who are not allowed to watch television.
(Example) 2. Mass Media is not using diverse ideas, but is actually promoting from a liberal perspective.)
When you come to class next week you should bring:
1. Your thesis statement.
2. An Annotated bibliography with a minimum of ten sources.
Definitions:
A bibliography is a list of sources (books, journals, web sites, periodicals, etc.) one has consulted when researching a topic. Bibliographies are sometimes called "references" or "works cited" depending on the style format you are using. A bibliography usually just includes the bibliographic information (i.e., the author, title, publisher, etc.).
An annotation is a summary and/or evaluation.
An annotated bibliography includes a summary and/or evaluation of each of the sources.
Depending on your project or the assignment, your annotations will include the following:
A summary of the source:
At this point in our process you may use the summary that has been provided by the library source or, if you have had the opportunity to read the book or document, your own summary.
